Some of the best dive sites of Honduras are also among the best in the Caribbean and Central America.

Many seasoned SCUBA divers often mention the Bay Islands as the best dive sites of Honduras, and this is a claim that can be easily substantiated by visiting the following three sites.

With eight main islands and more than 50 small cays, the Bay Islands Department of Honduras is blessed with an underwater paradise that begs to be discovered. Let’s take a look at the three best dive sites of Honduras according to locals and visitors.

El Aguila Wreck

This former cargo vessel was scuttled for the purpose of creating a diving attraction and an artificial reef. El Aguila is located off Roatan, an island that has become a major magnet for English-speaking expats, which is why this site is often called “the eagle” by local divemasters. This wreck has been in place since the late 20th century; it has broken into three parts since then, and it is home to a nascent coral that attracts plenty of blue parrot fish as well as other colorful species.

Half Moon Bay Wall

One of the best examples of the rich marine biodiversity of Honduras is this dive spot, which serves as a hatchery and nursery site for barracudas, spotted drums, and plectognath fish. Divemasters from Roatan often bring beginners here with the intent of getting them hooked on underwater exploration for life. Whereas the shallow portion of this dive mostly features juveniles, going deeper means running into giant sea fans and plenty of sponges.

Mary’s Place

This site is considered to be the most beautiful in the Caribbean coast of Central America. Mary’s Place is a large reef that features cracks caused by ancient volcanic activity; this fissures are long, deep and brimming with colorful marine life. Black coral is predominant, and massive schools of chubs and glass fish are very common. This site is ideal for both beginners and advanced divers; the latter can descend into the fissure while beginners can explore the top of this magical reef.
