The Living Walls of Sulawesi

Bearing a distinctive shape and the title of eleventh largest island on the planet, Sulawesi is found among a conglomerate of island nations that are renown for their marine life — the Philippines and Borneo to name only a couple. Home to many endemic freshwater and marine species, Sulawesi contains several nature parks and three marine reserves, all of which are dedicated to preserving the delicate balance of Sulawesi’s unique ecosystems. The shape of the island is thought to be the product of collisions of the Asian and Australian tectonic plates, perhaps even once forming part of the land bridge that led to settlement of Australia. The area remains a hotbed of seismic and volcanic activity, constantly redefining the peculiar borders of the island.
