Tiger Beach is one of the Bahamas’ most renown diving locations for the abundance of several types of sharks, including lemon sharks, tiger sharks, and even great hammerhead sharks. The site is entirely comprised of an underwater white sand “beach,” and because this point is where very shallow and very deep waters meet, the area is rich with fish and other kinds of shark prey. It was initially discovered in the late 1980s by a Captain Scott Smith, who was referred to the area by salvage divers who had already discovered at least two shipwrecks in the area. Several shallow reef sand bars can be found in the site, as well as some overhangs where it is not uncommon to see loggerhead sea turtles resting. Originally known as Dry Bar, the site’s name was changed to Tiger Beach when it became apparent that this is where tiger sharks were most likely to be seen. Today, there are several shark dive operators to choose from, some of which eschew cages and chainmaille altogether. Check out this exciting footage of a cageless shark diving tour.
