Tropical locales are often so popular among divers for the wide marine diversity, and depending on the area, the opportunity to see large pelagic species like dolphins, whales, and sharks. Isla Mujeres, located just off the northeastern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a place where divers and snorkelers can revel in the crystal clear turquoise waters and enjoy colorful coral reefs teeming with fishes, crustaceans, and invertebrates — but that’s not all. The summer season brings a visitor that can only be seen here this time of year, but by the hundreds: whale sharks. These gentle giants are brought to the waters surrounding Isla Mujeres by the plankton-rich waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico intersecting each other, bringing all kinds of nutrients to the surface. Check out this incredible footage taken by a whale shark tour operator in Isla Mujeres.
