Where Few Have Gone Before

You probably won’t find a roomful of volunteers to dive beneath our planet’s thick winter ice, but there will be a brave few who jump at the opportunity to explore a world that has seen little human visitation. Divers exploring beneath sea ice utilize techniques that are employed by cave divers, as the restricted area below the ice often presents the same challenges as cave diving does. Exposure protection is of the highest quality, as just a few minutes in these frigid waters with inappropriate protection can cause death. Rebreather systems are also preferred by many ice divers, allowing for more advanced exploration than a typical air cylinder. Check out this footage of the eerily beautiful landscape that lies below some of the Earth’s coldest waters. The winter season may be behind us now, but enough ice exists year-round to appease the most adventurous (and qualified) of SCUBA divers!
