James Cameron is one of the more well known celebrities noted for his interest in the underwater world, as evidenced by his contribution to deep sea exploration, but he isn’t the only personality in the spotlight to take up actively campaigning for ocean conservation. Check out these five celebrities that have championed the cause in their own right.

Richard Branson

Richard Branson is a long-time supporter of measures aimed at curbing carbon emissions and keeping the sea levels low. In this vein, Sir Richard Branson has put up over three billion dollars of his own money over the next ten years to help combat global warming.

Marine and ocean conservation are also high on Branson’s list. Branson has teamed up with celebrities like film director James Cameron to start an initiative called the Ocean Elders. The organization is aimed at arresting any industrial danger that harms the oceans.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio is well-known in celebrity circles for seeking to protect endangered wildlife in third-world locations and working towards marine conservation. DiCaprio is on the board of directors at many ocean conservation groups, including the Reef Check Foundation. This organization seeks to protect the oceans as well as coral reef and rocky reef.

January Jones

January Jones, an actress known for her role on AMC’s Mad Men, is an outspoken supporter of ocean conservation efforts. Like Richard Branson, one of Jones’ more specialized causes is eliminating the practice of shark finning. Jones is also part of the non-profit group Oceana, which seeks to protect the Earth’s oceans and combat harmful industrial fishing practices.

Jack Johnson

Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has worked to protect the waters off of Australia’s coasts. Johnson’s work with the Australian Marine Conservation Society, Australia’s premiere national charity aimed at protecting the oceans and marine wildlife, is truly inspiring. Since Johnson is an enthusiastic surfer, perhaps part of his drive to protect Australian waters is part of making sure that he and millions of others can enjoy the oceans for years to come.

Pierce Brosnan

Perhaps best known for being the dashing James Bond, Pierce Brosnan nonetheless supports efforts to curb offshore oil fracking that threatens our oceans. Brosnan and dozens of other celebrities are dedicated marine wildlife conservation and putting a stop to industrial pollution.
