Whenever you go on a trip, deciding what to bring is influenced by where you are going, and a day trip is no exception. Summer is full of opportunities to go adventuring in the sun and water. In all the fun, sometimes people forget very basic things that could prevent damage to personal belongings or their bodies. Here is our list of essential items to pack along on your water adventure:

Drinking Water

Just because you are headed to a body of water doesn’t mean water isn’t going to be necessary. Drinking water is very important, despite other beverages that may be available, especially on a hot day. Swimming in water actually can serve to dehydrate you, and sweating in the hot sun will gradually do the same. Stay hydrated by bringing a bottle that will hold a day’s supply of water. Better yet, check out this water bottle that comes with a removable filter and water purification tablets!

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit, even a small one, can be a helpful asset on a water adventure. You can customize your first aid kit any way you like, but there are several items that should be the base of your kit. Nature is rugged, and accidents do happen. It makes sense to be prepared.

Dry Box

A dry box is exactly what it sounds like: a box that keeps things dry. These come in all shapes and sizes, and can be used for all kinds of things. What they are useful to the outdoorsman for is keeping your belongings from finding the bottom of the river, lake, or sea when you forget they’re in your pocket. Dry boxes are specifically made to house keys, cellphones, digital cameras, money, credit cards, lip balm, gum — whatever it is you need to stay dry and with you. Not only are they watertight, they are airtight, dustproof, and UV protective. Keep your valuables clean and dry with a dry box.

Sunscreen

This seems like it should be a no-brainer, but many people put sunscreen on before they go out and that’s all the protection they have for a long day in the sun and water. A sunburn is absolutely no fun, and could be the harbinger of health problems to come. Sunscreen will wear off over time, and combined with water and sweat, it doesn’t stand a chance. Make sure you always have some with you on your water adventures, and protective clothing like hats and cover-ups for when exposure has reached your limit.

Food

Don’t forget to bring some energy. The outdoors can often require stamina, and you need to have fuel to provide the energy needed to swim, climb, bike, or any physical activity. Pack along items with protein and carbohydrates that are portable and easy to consume. Nuts, fruit, beef jerky…it will all be nutritious and delicious when you are feeling an energy low.
