DEMA Member Update and Annual Meeting
This is kind of a State of the Union meeting each year. As both an instructor and marketer in the industry, I find this event incredibly important because it gives insights into the demographics of the industry, how those demographics are changing, and what one of the largest entities in the diving world is doing to bring diving to the masses.
DEMA’s mission statement is simple:
To promote sustainable growth in recreational diving and snorkeling while protecting the environment.
Based on the expansion of technical diving throughout the show, it’ll be interesting to see if “recreational” gets dropped, “technical” gets added or something else occurs.
Based on Day 2 numbers that were available, attendance at the 2013 DEMA Show was slightly up compared to the 2012 DEMA Show in Las Vegas.
DEMA represents and works for a broad range of the industry, from retailers like us and your local dive center, to certification agencies like PADI, as well as all of the dive professionals and equipment manufacturers. Everyone has different needs, so it is a very difficult job for DEMA as an organization to create a concept to promote diving that speaks directly to every one of those sections of the industry.
Enough of the industry talk, let’s see some of the gear!
