While the prevailing idea with SCUBA diving is that you want to keep your profile as streamlined as possible, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t bring along items that are important to your dive. Having a dozen accessories clipped onto your BC and trailing below or behind you probably won’t be that efficient, so what you really need is some pockets. “But Aquaviews,” you say, “my BC only has a few pockets! Just how will I fit all the accessories I need into those little pockets?” Which is where we say…well, we’ll just tell you. After-market pockets. You can strap these pockets onto a weight belt, glue them to your wet or dry suit, or some even come with their own strap that adjusts to the size you want, for strapping onto an arm or leg. Here are a few after-market pocket options that can help you streamline your profile without sacrificing your gear needs, or altering your existing gear in any way.
We’re going to start with these Highland by XS Scuba neoprene pocket shorts, because we like their utility factor and ease of use. These shorts can be used alone, or pulled on over a wet or dry suit. The 2mm stretchy neoprene ensures a snug fit in any of those cases, with a drawcord at the waist for more precise sizing. The shorts have two Denier ballistic nylon pockets, which measure 9″ high, 6″ wide, and 3″ inches deep, giving you plenty of space to store accessories, or perhaps research samples you may be collecting from a reef or seabed. Each pocket features large Velcro enclosures, 5 stainless steel grommets, 3 stainless steel D-rings, two 4″ webbing straps, and mesh pockets inside for separation of smaller items. Beautiful in its simplicity, the OMS thigh pocket is great for divers who just need a little extra space. Two stretchy elastic bands wrap around your thigh, connected by sturdy plastic buckles. A 2″ webbing loop adds another level of attachment by securing to your waist belt if you choose. The pocket itself is roughly 10″ high, 6″ wide, and 2″ deep, with a large Velcro flap closure and internal D-ring to secure items inside. Constructed from sturdy Cordura and coated with urethane, this removable pocket will see you through plenty of dives.
And finally, for the diver who just doesn’t know if they’ll need a little space or a little more space, Zeagle brings you its expandable quick pocket. It attaches to any BC strap with a strong Velcro closure on the back, and has a strong Velcro flap closure on the front. But there’s one last important piece of Velcro on this pocket: a tab on the bottom of the pocket that, when undone, reveals a mesh expansion to the main pocket, allowing you to store small or large items based on circumstance. And since it’s made from durable Cordura nylon, you can trust that this add-on pocket will go the distance in your diving future.
