Jellyfish are some of the most beautiful and complex life forms that can be found within every one of the world’s oceans, and scientists continue to make amazing biological breakthroughs based on the study of jellyfish. The general public, however, might need a little more convincing of their amazing nature, as jellyfish also cause hundreds of fatalities per year and thousands of injuries, some of which are so severe that death is inevitable. One of the most notorious culprits of incidents like these is the Chironex fleckeri, or box jellyfish. With tentacles measuring 3 meters long, the box jellyfish is often undetected until its painful sting is delivered — which is exactly what makes it such an efficient predator, but quite unfortunate for humans. To compound the issue, the bell of the box jellyfish is so transparent that it could be right next to you and you likely wouldn’t see it. The sting of the box jellyfish has been described as excruciating, and contact with its venomous tentacles leave victims scarred for life. Check out this video of the deadly power of the box jellyfish.
