Getting SCUBA Certified: Starting Out

For those that are interested in learning how to SCUBA dive, we found a great video series that explains in detail what the process involves, how long it takes to get certified, and how to choose the right gear. The person in this video is getting certified through NAUI, so the method may be slightly different with another organization, but the fundamental points are the same: classwork, pool training, and open water training. The first segment will focus on how to choose a mask, snorkel and fins, and what you can expect from the classwork portion of the process. The open water dives are filmed in a National Marine Sanctuary off Key Largo, giving you a fantastic preview of tropical diving — if that’s not incentive, we don’t know what is!

The series begins in a local dive shop, which is a common place to start for SCUBA training. Tune in next week for the second segment of Getting SCUBA Certified!

  1. Christ its soo incredibly easy. Copy the shit from the PADI book get the card forget EVERYTHING they “taught” you, remember to check you gear before you go in, watch air and depth, keep breathing and come back with five hundred psi as you exit the water.

  2. ^worst “scuba diver” I’ve ever heard of

  4. Hey, I took that picture! 8-D I love it when I see people using my pictures! This was taken during a PADI Open Water Pool Session. I believe we had just finished with module 5 and this was “play” time.

  5. Still remember getting both my PADI and NAUI Open Water certifications back in the day while living and working in Australia.

  6. Got certified at age 14, in 1972. Had to bare valve breath the length of the pool, and give mouth to mouth to my instructor while floating in the water with full gear. The good old days, huh!

  7. 1979 Naui cert in San Diego. Had to drag my assigned classmate out of the surf and up the beach to a line our instructor drew in the sand. I was in full gear and my buddy was over 300lbs in gear. I did manage to get him mostly out of the water and my instructor with tongue in cheek pointed to her line. I told her no he was going to die right where he was. The instructor and the whole class busted up.

  8. Certified in “05″ Bonaire is calling my name again! :)
