SCUBA diving requires a specific set of knowledge and skills to successfully participate. The sport of diving is unique, however, in that a mistake can have fatal consequences. Because of the inherent risks, each diver must pass a meticulous training and testing program before entering the open water. This training leaves divers with a set of skills that can transfer to everyday life.

First on the list of SCUBA skills is the ability to follow important processes and safety checks. This requires discipline that must remain at the forefront, despite a divers urge to just get in the water. Learning to eliminate distractions and focus on a task at hand helps ensure that the diver’s equipment is connected and working properly. This skill can transfer to the workplace for individuals involved in any job that requires diligently following specific instructions or procedures.

Another SCUBA skill is the requirement for communication. Underwater with no ability to speak, divers must find ways to consistently communicate with one another throughout the entire dive. Communication is pertinent in every aspect of our lives. Taking the time to make ourselves understood, and ensuring that we understand someone else, makes us all better employees, spouses, parents, and friends.

Finally, SCUBA diving can be a dangerous sport. When things go wrong, it is critical to stay calm and respond appropriately. Panicking gets divers killed. The ability to remain calm and rational, despite a frightening or unusual situation is one of the most critical skills learned in SCUBA diving. This training can help divers in everyday life by reminding them to think through a problem and resolve it instead of panicking and being unproductive.

SCUBA skills allows divers to dive successfully and safely. The dedication and discipline required to following safety procedures, to communicate well, and to stay calm when faced with a challenge are all crucial skills that divers need to survive underwater. Those skills and training don’t disappear on land and can be helpful in everyday life situations.
