Dive computers rocked the world of scuba diving with their entry, replacing dive tables and the need for manual calculations. They have since became an indispensable piece of dive gear for scuba divers the world over. Referred to as a diver’s best friend, dive computers are a tool for dive navigation, telling depth, decompression stop calculation, logging information and safe ascent rate indication and they make diving much safer and more comfortable. But, gone are the days where dive computers did only that. Today, dive computers come with even more bells and whistles and technology has taken them to an all new level.

The influx of new dive computers in the market today, displays a startling new trend. Larger displays, color screens (even HD screens), advanced features, versatility for all types of diving including technical diving, far more detailed calculation of decompression, hoseless air integration, digital compasses, GPS features are some of the advances we’re seeing taking over the traditional dive computers that looked more like inconspicuous wrist watches.

Here’s a look at some of the new and improved dive computers in the market today, to see what I’m talking about:

VR Technology VRx with a single cell Open & Closed Circuit Trimix/Nitrox Dive Computer

A top of the line technical dive computer through and through, the VRx an advanced and complete decompression planning aid. With features like a large screen high resolution color display, open or close circuit compatible, reprogrammable and can be used for up to 10 gases including Nitrox, Trimix or heliox gas mixes this dive computer is truly a 21st century interactive tool.

Mares Icon HD Wrist Dive Computer
The Rolls-Royce of dive computers, the bright colored, high-def display screen of this computer itself is simply amazing. There are just four buttons used for navigation which makes it like any other dive computer and simple to use. groundbreaking feature of the Icon is the ability to download to the computer via USB dive site image maps and view dive maps on the display during a dive. Other features include- Nitrox and Air diving, a fully functional free diving mode, more than a 100 hours of log-book recording capacity, 4 manually selectable altitude programs, gas switching during the dive for up to three different mixtures, and audible alerts and alarms. the only downside is it’s not air integrated, but Mares plan to upgrade that this spring.

UWATEC Galileo SOL Hoseless Wrist Dive Computer Complete with Transmitter

Although, unlike the other dive computers in this list, this one doesn’t come with a colored screen; the Galileo Sol is the only dive computer with the ability to track the diver’s heart rate and calculate how it will affect the dive namely air consumption and decompression requirements. It also offers an integrated digital compass that is completely unaffected by tilt, easy-to-read charts and graphs , 100 log-able hours, air integration and PC compatibility.

Currently Leisurepro.com is offering an unbelievable special price on the Sherwood Profile Dive Computer Console, CR2506, where for a limited time only, they are charging just $199.95. So why is this offer such a steal? Well read on to find out.

The Sherwood Profile CR2506 is a console dive computer that comes along with an analogue SPG gauge . This model has been around for a while now and Sherwood has come out with a newer CR2509 model which includes Nitrox capability and other features, however, this new introduction has made the CR2056 even better value for money. The console computer is simply one of the most rugged and easy to read user-friendly dive computers available. At its current price offered by Leisurepro, we can’t think of any reason why someone would opt for a standard analog console with the CR2506 costing the same and even lesser than most.

Sherwood Profile Dive Computer Console CR2506

The Profile gives you exceptional reliability with one of the most intuitive displays anywhere. Color indicating bands and a logical layout of information provide readings at a glance. Profile’s deep-diving algorithm calculates decompression stop to 60 feet and reads depth down to 330 feet. With added bells and whistles such as a temperature readout, a backlit display, a 50 dive log and user replaceable batteries, the only thing we could find lacking in the Profile was the absence of a Nitrox mode.

The Pressure Gauge is in a two inch format with color coded face measure pressure from 0 to 5000 psi, with an analog temperature gauge in addition to the digital temperature readout available in the computer. Traditional in design, this console places the computer and pressure gauges on the same side. The flip side features a small, round slate which can be replaced by an optional compass that can be added at any time.

Here are some of the Profile CR2506’s key features:

Graphic ascent display.

Visual alarms.

Temperature readout.

HydrGlow backlit display, for crystal-clear readability.

50-dive log

Automatic altitude compensation to 14,000 feet, so you can know were it’s safe to fly.

User replaceable batteries.

Pressure Gauge Features:

2 inch diameter color-coded face

Measures tank pressure up to 5000 psi

Temperature gauge

So what are you waiting for? Avail of Leisurepro’s current special offer before its too late and enjoy this exceptionally reliable and user-friendly dive computer console.

One of the most innovative and unique dive computers available in the market today has got to be the Mares Icon HD Wrist mounted dive computer. Just one glance at its TFT LCD color display and you’ll know what we’re talking about.

featured above the Mares Icon HD Dive computer available at Leisurepro.com

At first glance it appears to be a fairly large dive computer so it might just put off those looking for smaller more inconspicuous dive computers that can also be used as wrist watches. However the display is large and the User Interface very intuitive, and one cannot help but admire the True full-color display screen. Yes that’s right color in a dive computer screen..it simply is amazing. This feature alone instantly cancels out any initial misgivings one may have about the size of the product.

There are just four buttons used for navigation which makes it like any other dive computer, and after just a few short minutes of playing around with these, one gets a good sense of how to quickly and easily navigate from the main menu to the various features of the Icon HD. The screen is great on night dives or for use in murky waters where it provides the user with crystal clear readability.

Now lets get the basic features out of the way first..the Icon HD uses Mares’ RGBM algorithm, allows for both Nitrox and Air diving, a fully functional free diving mode, more than a 100 hours of log-book recording capacity, 4 manually selectable altitude programs, gas switching during the dive for up to three different mixtures, and audible alerts and alarms.

The additional or special features of the Icon HD include a Digital Compass with full tilt, which can be activated both on the surface and also during the dive. The sighting function allows the compass to display the selected direction on the screen as well, and also prompts you how many degrees off course you are.

Another groundbreaking feature of the Icon is the ability to download to the computer via USB dive site image maps and view dive maps on the display during a dive. While we are still ways off from an underwater GPS system, the Icon provides you with the next best thing.

Battery life of the Icon HD is as one would expect will last you approximately 6-8 dives, but Mares has a solution for this problem as well. The Icon features a user rechargeable batter which charges via the USB connection and charging station adapter, making it easy to recharge your dive computer after as the batteries discharge.

Other notable mentions regarding the Icon HD is the graphical display which shows you where you are in the water column and how close you are to your decompression limits in the form of graphical bars. The dive profile which displays the dive information on the screen in real time is another incredibly handy feature.

The only drawback of the Icon HD is the lack of wireless air integration into the computer which one might add is a serious limitation for a product in its price range. However Mares have said that they plan to include an air integration upgrade into the Icon HD in spring 2011. Otherwise the Mares Icon HD is truly the Rolls-Royce of dive computers.

Easily one of the most important pieces of scuba diving equipment today, the dive computer is an absolute necessity for any serious diver. Referred to as a diver’s best friend, dive computers are a tool for dive navigation, telling depth, decompression stop calculation, logging information and safe ascent rate indication. Dive computers are an indispensable piece of dive gear for scuba divers and make diving much more safer and more comfortable.

We here at Aquaviews believe that after buying your own Scuba mask, snorkel and fins, a dive computer should be your next big scuba gear purchase on your list. However, for such a crucial purchase it’s not something you should take lightly. It’s important to take the time to research and know exactly what’s out there, in order to make a good decision on which dive computer is best for you! With all the different types and styles out there, it’s much like picking from a menu of whatever features take your fancy and appeal to you. What you need to look out for is a combination of the functions you need, in a single dive computer, and we’re here to help you with that.

Here’s a look into the different types of dive computers and their features to help you make the choice that fits your needs and even your pocket:

Styles:
There are essentially 2 types or styles of Dive Computers available- Wrist or watch style and console or module dive computers.

Wrist Dive Computers- The more popular choice among recreational divers today, mainly for their convenience, wrist dive computers as the name implies are worn on the wrist by the diver and look like large faced watches. An advantage this style of dive computer has over the console mounted style is that as it’s not connected to your other gear, it’s more versatile to be used with any scuba kit. (Take for example the Cressi Archimede II Wrist Computer pictured right.)

Console Dive Computers- This style of dive computer is a slightly more economical option. It is attached to other Scuba gear via a hose and typically come with a pressure gauge, unlike the most wrist mounted options (excluding air-integrated wrist computers). Advantage of this style is that the it is sometimes easier to read as the display is fairly large. (Pictured right the Oceanic VEO 1.0 Air/Nitrox Dive Computer SWIV Double Gauge Combo)

Dive Computer Features:

Basic Functions: Depth Gauge and Decompression Calculations
A basic and primary feature of all dive computers is the fact that it measures depth. It’s measurement of depth is a lot more accurate than an average analog depth gauge. Other than just that it carefully determines how much time was spent at each depth, all the while calculating decompression times, allowing you to focus more on the diving and the scenery rather than the math of diving. Based on your dive’s duration and depths, a dive computer calculates how many decompression stops you need to make and at what depths. It also calculates the surface interval time you need to spend between dives and also calculates when it is safe to fly after diving- an all important for divers who rely on air travel at the end if their diving vacations.

Advanced Features:
All dive computers, tell depth and do decompression calculations, but now a days they’re doing a lot more! More features on a dive computer don’t necessarily function any better than ones with less and they definitely don’t make your dives any more safer, but they are like icing on the cake and can make life a lot more easier and comfortable.

Read about all the different functions and special features you can choose in a dive computer in Scuba Gear Buying Guides: Dive Computers (Special Features)

In the first part of our buying guide on dive computers we saw the 2 main styles and the basic functions you’ll find in every dive computer (Click here if you missed it). Now here’s a closer look at some of the extra features you’ll find offered that differentiate dive computers from each other. By knowing what’s on offer and the choices you have, it’ll be easier for you to pick what may be the most suitable for you.

Auto Activate- Some dive computers automatically turn themselves on when submerged underwater at a particular depth. This helps if you are rather forgetful as others require you push a button to start while some will not work under water if they have not been activated on the surface first. Take the Mares Nemo Excel Dive Computer Wrist Watch pictured right for example.

Memory- Dive computers come with different memory storage sizes. What you may want to look for though is one that retains the memory incase the battery has to be changed during a dive day or trip. This way you don’t lose the data during a battery change.

Nitrox Compatible- Nitrox diving is becoming increasingly popular. While all nitrox dive computers can be used to make regular air dives, an air computer must be nitrox programmable in order to be used with a mixed breathing gas as it contains a higher percentage of oxygen than air. Well worth it if you intend on diving nitrox any time in the future or as possibility.
See the Suunto D6 Wrist Computer pictured left for example.

PC Connectivity- Many dive computers come with a way to download the information on it to your PC using an optional interface. This could be a very useful feature to have.

Backlight- Not all dive computers have a backlight or illumination feature that allows you see your reading more clearly in lower light conditions, but a lot do. A backlit display dive computer is a good feature to consider having especially if you do lots of low visibility diving, wreck dives and for cave diving. Take the Oceanic Pro Plus 2.1, Air/Nitrox, Air Integrated Computer pictured right for example.

Navigation - Today, dive computers allow you to supplement or replace your old-fashioned compass with digital displays of your heading. Dive computers with compass features and navigation now don’t even require you to have the instrument perfectly level to function properly. Some high end computers also offer a GPS (Global Positioning System) feature that uses satellites to mark exactly where you are. Extremely useful for those who keep detailed records of their dives for the purposes of search/recovery, treasure hunting, or dive site mapping.

Air Integrated- Air integrated dive computers measure tank pressure and estimates of how long your air supply will last at the current rate of air consumption. These dive computers are available in two types, one that can be attached to the end of a high pressure hose and it replaces the submersible pressure gauge or a high end hoseless air integrated dive computer which consists of wrist or BC mount instrument which acts as a receiver and a transmitter which screws into the high pressure port of the regulator first stage. It uses radio signals to send information about the air supply in your tank to the dive computer which displays this. Hoseless Scuba dive computers are among the most expensive dive computers you can buy.

Buddy Pressure Check- Swim to within 4-6 feet of your buddy and press a button to see his or her tank pressure – how easy could it be? No hand signals or disruptions. The Oceanic Atom 2.0 Air Integrated Hoseless Dive Computer Watch now comes with this swanky new feature!

High Definition -
Yes, now dive computers come in color and High Definition just like flat screen televisions, cell phones, PDAs, notebook computers and the likes. Just makes a dive computer way cooler! See the Mares Icon HD Wrist Dive Computer below

When it comes to entry-level dive computers or back-up dive computers, the Aeris Manta is sure to feature on the top 5 lists of any consumer out looking for one. Built to look like a sporty wristwatch, the Manta Scuba and Free Diving Wrist computer offering divers the full functionality of both Air and Nitrox gas mixes.

Aeris Manta Scuba and Freediving Wrist Computer

In watch mode, the Manta does its job well, with a 1/100th of a second chronograph stopwatch, with lap timer, 24 hour countdown timer, daily alarm, alternate time zone with date, 12/24 hour clock, and OceanGlo® Backlight. The slim profile design makes the computer look inconspicuous like any other wristwatch allowing it be used as both.

As a Dive Computer, there are four modes of operation, Air, Nitrox, Gauge, and Free Dive. The Manta can automatically switch to Dive Mode when the diver submerges beyond 4ft of water, and displays critical dive information clearly, in large easy-to-read digits. In Dive mode only key information that the diver needs such as depth, no-decompression limit, bottom time and nitrogen loading bar graph are displayed and other information can be accessed by pushing a button. This keeps the interface uncluttered and the user can easily gather critical dive information with a single glance.

Aeris Manta Scuba and Freediving Wrist Computer

A big plus with this product is its numerous and customizable alarms. Alarms are both in audible form, and in the form of flashing LED lights combined with alphanumeric text on the dial like “TOO FAST” etc. Alarms can be customized by the user an example of which is the maximum depth reached alarm and the ‘dive time remaining’ alarm. The computer also allows the diver to stop the audible beeping alarms during a dive with the user acknowledgement feature, where the diver can stop the alarm by pressing a button, so as not to annoy or distract other divers around.

The Aeris Manta uses the AERIS Personal Dive Computer Algorithm which is derived from Diving Science and Technology’s (DSAT) studies ( Modified Haldanean) on which the PADI RDP is also based upon. User adjustable Personal Conservative Factor settings on the computer further reduce your risk exposure to decompression sickness. As a Nitrox computer the Manta can be programmed for Nitrox mixtures from 21% to 50% only, which makes a great addition to new divers wanting to start off on Nitrox Diving.

Aeris Manta Scuba and Free Diving Wrist Computer “Old Style”

A huge plus of the Manta is the Diver-Replaceable Battery that makes it easy to change batteries while on a long holiday or caught on a liveaboard with no service centers or jewelers around. The Battery “hot-swap” feature allows you to change batteries between dives while maintaining all calculations.

A further handy set of features are the 24-hour countdown timer and calculated Desaturation Time function which provides the theoretical time required to off-gas all residual nitrogen at sea level .

Overall the Aeris Manta is a good entry-level dive computer and also a great backup dive computer for more advanced divers. The computer is user-friendly ,easy to use, and has a decent array of features and functions that will serve a diver well beyond his/her early diving days.

At first glance this dive computer is simply a stunner to look at. With an elegant and slim form factor more resembling a digital watch than a dive computer, the Suunto D6 is the perfect product combining practical everyday wrist-watch functionality with a full featured dive computer.

featured above the Suunto D6 Wrist Computer available at Leisurepro.com

Weighing just 113g the D6 is made from a solid stainless steel body and is also available in a metallic bracelet version or the standard D6 Elastometer which has a rubber wrist strap.

Suunto D6 is full-decompression wristop dive computer with an integrated digital compass. Its three operating modes, gas-switching functionality, and the Suunto RGBM deep stop algorithm combine to make it one of the most feature-rich and versatile dive computers available. – Suunto.com

The D6 features 3 primary modes, Time, Dive and Memory. In the Time/watch mode, the D6 provides the user with all the basic features of a watch, with daily alarm, calendar, a stopwatch and the option of a second time zone (dual time) which is a handy feature for travelling divers. Certain features of the dive computer such as the compass and temperature readings may be used in watch mode as well.

The Dive Computer mode allows you to dive on both , Air or Nitrox, and also has a gauge mode which turns off the computer and acts as a bottom timer with relevant information. Nitrox mode allows the user to select from 21-100% oxygen concentrations and also features the ability of Gas switching during a dive. The D6 utilizes the RGBM or Reduced Gradient Bubble Model algorithm developed by Suunto and Bruce R Wienke for determining nitrogen loading for the diver.

The Dive Log or the memory mode of the D6 displays detailed dive profile graphs as well as all the usual dive information, and can be downloaded to a PC using Sunnto’s optional PC Download Kit which can be purchased as an extra. The memory mode allows for up to ~100 hours of diving information to be stored in its memory.

featured above is the Suunto PC Download Kit (USB) for D9, D6 & D4 Computers available at Leisurepro.com

One of the best features of the Sunnto D6 is the integrated digital compass which can be used in both dive modes as well as on land, in the watch mode. The compass prominently displays the cardinal compass directions (N, NE, S, SW etc), as well as provides bearings in a degree readout in the lower corner of the display. The best feature of the compass is the ability to lock on to a bearing, after which the compass will indicate with left or right arrows when you are off course. This is especially useful for underwater navigation and making your way back to the boat.

The main difference between the Suunto D6 and its larger brother the Suunto D9 is that the D9 is wireless air integrated, slightly thicker and has a Titanium case instead of the Stainless Steel of the D6, otherwise features and functionality are the same.

The battery life of the D6 is expected to last 2-3 years depending on use of compass and backlight, however the battery is not user replaceable which means you would need to have the battery shipped or taken to an authorized dealer/service center to have the batteries replaced.

Overall the Suunto D6 is an excellent product and a must buy for anyone looking for a reasonably priced wrist mounted dive computer with all the bells and whistles.

When it comes to non-air integrated wrist mounted dive computers the Mares Nemo is one product that has slowly achieved cult status and is among the few “classic” dive computers of recreational diving, like the Suunto Gekko. These dive computers are reliable, have simple and intuitive functions, are compact, can be used an everyday wristwatch, and most of all are reasonably priced “Mid-range” computers making them so popular.

featured above is the Mares Nemo (Steel Casing) available at leisurepro.com

The Mares Nemo comes in two forms, a more expensive but lightweight Titanium casing, or the more affordable but heavier brushed stainless Steel casing version. Both casings and mechanical components of the steel or titanium versions are Swiss-made offering maximum reliability and precision, while the watch itself is designed and assembled by Mares in Italy.

The Nemo is a great looking wristwatch/dive computer, and offers four dive modes, Air, nitrox, Bottom Time, and Free-Diving mode which should satisfy the diving needs of the most demanding diver. Logging upto 50 dives and dive profiles in its internal log-book, the Nemo can also be paired with the optional IRIS (Infra-Red Interface System) PC Interface for downloading logbook dives to a PC. The buttons on the Nemo are nice and big, so they’re easy to use even if you’re wearing thick diving gloves, and the battery is user replaceable which means you won’t have to keep shipping it back to the manufacturer every time you need the battery replaced. Audible Alarms, a powerful backlight, and temperature displays in both Celsius and Fahrenheit are huge plusses for and affordable dive computer.

During the dive in Dive mode the Nemo displays your current depth, the water temperature (C/F), your dive time and the remaining no-decompression time at the current depth, your ascent rate in metres/per min, and you can also check your maximum depth for the dive by pushing a button.

For Nitrox Divers, the Nemo supports setting of the percentage O2 from 21% to 50%, in increments of 1%, Setting of PPO2 max from 1.2 to 1.6 bar. And Free Diving mode is a great feature to have, and allows free divers to easily read the large bottom timer displays.

The Nemo dive computer uses the Mares-Wienke RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubbles Model) algorithm which takes into account the phenomenon of micro-bubbles in order to prevent their formation to the greatest possible extent. In over 10,000 real dives monitored by Dr. Bruce Wienke in the Los Alamos laboratories, the formation of micro-bubbles has been studied and evaluated which resulted in the created of this algorithm. The algorithm includes the deep stop protocol which is a pause for 30 seconds to a minute at half of the maximum depth of the dive if necessary.

One of the drawbacks we found with the design of the Nemo is the rounded glass dome dial tends to jut out prominently, and would require the optional scratch guard sold as an accessory to prevent it from getting accidental scratches.

Overall however the Mares Nemo is perhaps one of the best wrist mounted dive computers out there, that provides a diver with all the bells & whistles of a more expensive dive computer in a more affordable package.

Dive computers are rapidly becoming an integral part of recreational Scuba diving equipment, and most divers will seldom dive without one. However, like any piece of diving equipment dive computers too can sometimes fail, and if a failure occurs in the middle of a dive, this can often cause divers to panic.

In the unlikely event of a dive computer failure during a dive and you have no backup means of calculating your decompression times, the best piece of advice is the same as for any equipment failure which is; abort the dive.

If the computer malfunctions, and you are only diving an NDL (No Decompression Limit) profile, and you know that you are well within your NDL, simply abort the dive. Even though your dive buddy may be wearing a dive computer, there is no way of being sure that your profile was the same as his. Also ensure you make your safety stop at 10ft/3m. You may use your buddies dive computer to monitor your ascent and time your safety stop if you aren’t wearing a watch.

If it was your first dive of the day and you know you were within NDL, then referencing a dive table, look-up the surface interval for the maximum pressure group (i.e. Z in the PADI RDP) and observe the maximum surface interval before planning your next dive using the Dive Table.

If you were unsure whether you were within NDL before the dive computer conked-off, then it is recommended that you do not dive again for at least 24 hours and allow your body to reset and allow all the microbubbles to dissolve.

It is always a good practice to plan your maximum bottom times using a dive table before a dive and write down the depth & times allowable on a dive slate if you do not carry a copy of the dive tables in your BCD pocket. Wearing a water-resistant or dive watch in addition to your dive computer will help a diver fall back on his dive tables in case of a computer failure, provided he remembers to turn on his stopwatch or record the entry time at the start of the dive. In the same manner an analog SPG or depth gauge with a maximum depth needle will help you keep track of how deep you went when your computer failed.

One of Suunto’s base models by no means is this dive computer lacking in essential functions. Both air and nitrox compatible the easy-to-use push buttons and a straightforward menu structure make Suunto Gekko simple to operate.
