There is constant innovation being carried out on all kinds of scuba diving equipment, with better, faster, safer and cheaper gear being introduced in to the market with every passing year. One such company that has done some out-of-the-box thinking in fin design is Sporasub, a French company specializing in Spearfishing equipment, but has come out with a whole range of one-of-a-kind products with the Sporasub Revolution Fins being one of them.

Sporasub has created a unique foot pocket on the Revolution Fin. The foot pocket is actually a proper shoe and not a rubber pocket that you slip your foot in like in the case of an ordinary fin. In what may arguably be the most comfortable foot pocket available in the market today, the revolutionary idea of using an actual shoe integrated into a swim fin increases user comfort and takes away several of the problems people faced with using regular fins. A comfortable fitting foot pocket can mean no chaffing, and blisters, allowing for a better, less stressful dive.

The vamp of the shoe pocket is pre-molded and built of nylon with polyurethane covering with both materials waterproof and highly resistant to water. The padding used inside the shoe and internal sole are water-repellent, which eliminates water absorption, or water stagnation. There are three Velcro straps that secure the shoe to your foot to a custom fit and yet comfortable fit. The shoe sole is made from EMS Grivory thermoplastic (a leading provider of high-performance polyamides) with non-slip heels also made of polyurethane. The sole also has conveniently placed drain channels on the inside, which allow for emptying of water after use, in order to avoid water stagnation or build-up of mold in the shoe.

The Blade portion of the Revolution Fin is no less extraordinary than the foot pocket. The Revolution Blade is removable and replaceable made of high quality polypropylene. The 26º angle of the fin, with respect to the axis of the sole, creates a push that is equal during down-kick and up-kick, limiting the area of standstill where there is no thrust. The stiffness of these materials allows the diver to unload leg movement on the fins without wasting energy, giving you the highest level of performance.

There are also five stabilizers that have been inserted in the fin. The four lateral stabilizers, two on the upper part and two on the bottom, impede fin leeway during swimming. The central-upper stabilizer, moreover, while standing still during activities like spear fishing, keeps the fin slightly off the sea floor and thus limits any lifting of sediments. The fin is connected to the shoe pocket through the use of three stainless steel M5 metric screws which allows the blade to be detached from the shoe for replacement.

The Sporasub Revolution Fins are currently available at Leisurepro.com

When we first start scuba diving we don’t put too much thought into how we kick underwater to propel ourselves. As long as we’re moving in the direction we want, divers just sort of kick their way around forgetting the finning tips first taught to them by their open water certification instructors. However, with time and experience we yearn to polish even our most basic scuba skills and rightly so, to be more efficient on air (scuba gold!) and become more refined, better divers overall.

So, going back to basics, finning or kicking underwater affects more than just your movement and propulsion underwater and has more than one technique. Various finning styles used at different times and according to the conditions could really save on effort which in diving directly translates to air consumption.

Here’s a look at the most common finning techniques-

The Flutter Kick

This is most likely the first style of finning you are taught when you’re learning to scuba dive. In this standard kick, the legs move up and down in opposing directions with a fairly straight leg. When performed properly, the action originates from the hips and provides propulsion and forward thrust on the downward stroke of each fin. The body position in this technique involves the hips and legs to be inline with the torso, the knees only bend slightly on the upward stroke of the kick and straighten on the downward stroke while the toes (fins) remain pointed.

The flutter kick works best with long, gentle strokes, using the muscles at the front of the thighs to do most of the work and is good to thrust yourself forward. Diving isn’t about speed though and this style is rarely used by advanced divers as it is more strenuous and could cause a diver to waste energy. Plus, this style of kicking can easily disturb nearby seabed or marine life by kicking up silt or sand, so is best avoided when near the seabed or along a wall.

Modified Flutter Kick

This is the most common and practiced by many. It involves a flutter kick with the knees bend. It still propels the diver but at reduced efficiency and less effort. Good for a slow and relaxed dive. Performed best by those with floaty feet!

The Scissors Kick

The body position in this technique looks like the flutter kick i.e legs straight, knees slightly bent. But, the leg motion is quite different. Instead of the legs crossing each other in an up and down movement, the legs are widened and then brought together sharply (like a pair of scissors closing) and held in that position for a glide count. One leg is dedicated to the upper part of the kick, the other for the downward stroke. This kick is also known as the split kick and is favored for it’s power without the effort of the flutter kick.

This is a great finning style to use when cruising and allows you to swim closer to the substrate without making contact with your fins or stirring up sand or silt.

The Frog Kick

This style of kicking is one of the most popular among cave divers to avoid kicking up silt or sand in confined spaces. In the frog kick the body and upper legs maintain a straight, horizontal trim but the knees are bent so the fin blades point upward on a steep diagonal. You are required to kick similar to the manner used in the breast stroke of swimming but you have to twist the ankle/lower leg at a right angle in order to achieve proper orientation of the fin. Many divers find it relaxing to use the frog kick as a general cruising kick, either by itself or alternating with the flutter kick every few minutes. The frog kick however, does not work very well with some types of fins like split fins.

Short Frog Kick

In this modified version of the frog kick, divers don’t move their legs as far out as the standard frog kick, instead restrict the movements of your thighs and knees while letting the the calves and a flick of the ankles to do all the work. This is a good gentle kick, with not a lot of thrust making it ideal for use in confined spaces.

Backwards Kick

As the name suggest this is for moving away from objects or moving backwards. It’s not an easy or elegant kick, but is useful in many situations. This technique is almost a complete reverse of the frog kick, the fins work through the first half when your legs move out and way from you then pulling them close to your body, scoop the fins forwards and stopped halfway to prevent you from moving forward. The legs are delicately positioned back to the start point and repeated.

In our last gear related post, we dived straight into the History of SCUBA Diving & saw the basic Evolution of modern SCUBA Gear as we know it today. Scuba technology since has grown with the times, and scuba manufacturers today are catering to a lot more than just basic functionality. Modern advancements Scuba equipment shows a progression in design, keeping a divers comfort as well as taking into consideration different situations a diver might find themselves in. Here’s a closer look at Scuba fins- Then and Now

Then
As you can imagine, the concept of fins (also known as swimfins or flippers) were first thought of, after observing marine life and their ability to move through water efficiently. The design and idea of the invention of fins, is credited to a few who had thought of this same way to improve man’s mobility in water. They included Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Alfonso Borelli (son of a Spanish soldier and Italian mother from Naples in 1608) and Benjamin Franklin (who is said to have made a pair of early swimfins using two thin pieces of wood in the early 1700′s).

However, Louis de Corlieu in France and Owen Churchill in the United States, working independently of each other, were the first to make swimfins a practical reality. Louis de Corlieu was the first to patent swim fins in France in 1933. Churchill too patented his design which was said to have been inspired by a group of natives in Tahiti, who he noticed on the beach weaving small mats from palm fronds and dipping them into a tub of hot tar. When the tar had cooled and hardened they would tie these mats to their feet and enter the ocean to swim or free dive. Fascinated by what he had seen, he returned to the States and immediately began developing and patenting the first rubber swim fins in the US. The first basic fins looked this…

“The feet and legs of a human being were not designed by nature for swimming . . . and the use of my invention converts the feet into swimming members of correct hydrodynamic structure and design.” — Owen Churchill

In 1948 Luigi Ferraro, collaborated with the Italian diving equipment company Cressi-sub, designed the first full-foot fin, the Rondine, named after the Italian word for swallow. Till today, Cressi’s Rondine full-foot fin line features the embossed outline of the bird on the foot pockets and the blades.

Fins first started out as basic, simple stiff plastic, composite or rubber blades. This basic fin is known today as paddle fins. In 1964, Georges Beuchat and commercialized Jetfins which were vented fins. The vents at the base of the foot pocket, were designed to allow for the passage of water to lessen effort during recovery and improve kick efficiency. The Jetfin tradename and design were sold to Scubapro in the 1970’s. (Pictured left: Scuba Pro Jetfins)

Now
Today, scuba manufacturers have come up with a number of different designs including the very popular split fins. These fins are said to work in a similar fashion to propellers where in it creates lift forces to move the swimmer forwards. (Read our Split Fins Vs Paddle Fins post for more). Pivoting blade systems designs and use of multiple materials on the fin blade to make the it more flexible and allow water to channel of it better are newer designs used my equipment manufacturers nowadays, (see:Mares Volo Fins with Optimized Pivoting Blades)

Of the more unique designs of fins today, comes Force Fins featuring an open foot pocket, that encloses only the instep, leaving the toes free so the foot can flex. Made exclusively by a California manufacturer, this range of fins is designed to minimize the water turbulence produced, and reduce the diver’s kicking effort. Force Fins are closely modeled to fish tails with a v-cut at the blade end and is made from polyurethane.

FlipFins are another unusual fin design taking into consideration a divers mobility issue when they need to walk on land wearing fins. The Amphibian FlipFins from Omega Aquatics are convertible fins, designed to be half fin, half shoe. They fold up out of the way allowing you to walk freely out of the water and click down with your first kick once you’re in the water turning into fins. (Read: A Cool Twist to Fins- Amphibian FlipFins from Omega Aquatics for more).

And lastly, the latest arrival of the fancy fins are the X-Stream fins from Mares. Looking nothing like traditional scuba fins we’re used to seeing, the Mares X-Stream fins look more like they arrived from the future. This lightweight fin, rated the lightest in it’s group is said to be one of the faster fins in terms of speed and it’s successful design shows as it generates a lot of power for not a lot of effort, a result of some award winning design and technology. (Read more here:Next-Gen Fins: Mares Introduces The X-Stream Fins).

Fish Fins
Fins are one of the most distinctive features of a fish and appear in several different forms. Each fin of a fish aids in its maneuverability and the ability to swim. Understanding the types of fins, makes it easier for scuba divers, or snorkelers identify the variety of fish if they need to look-up their sightings after the dive. There are five main fins on a fish that are commonly described in fish Identification.

Pectoral

Dorsal

Pelvic

Caudal

Anal

Dorsal Fins
Dorsal fins are located on the back or on the top of the fish, and aid the fish in sharp turns or stops, and assist the fish in rolling. Fish may have up to three distinct dorsal fins, known as proximal, middle , and distal dorsal fins, however several fish have just two dorsal fins with the middle and distal fins fused together.

The type of Doral fins are:

Single

Split

Pointed

Trigger

Spine Triangular

Trailing

Tail Fin or Caudal fin
The Caudal fin or Tail fin is the primary fin of the fish that gives it forward propulsion and speed. For fish identification, the type of Caudal fin is used to distinguish one type from another. The main types of Caudal fins found in bony fish are:

Indented

Round

Square

Forked

Lunate

Pointed

Ventral or Pelvic Fins
The pair of ventral or pelvic fins located on the bottom front of the fish help aid in stability and slowing down the fish, or stopping it quickly. The fins also help the fish move upwards and downwards through the water.

Anal Fin
The Anal fin supports the dorsal fins by providing the fish with more stability in the water, controlling the rolling motion.

Pectoral Fin
Like the ailerons in an aircraft’s wings, the pectoral fins located on either side of the fish, helps it turn left or right and also provides support while swimming.

Finlets or Scutes
Finlets are small fins located between the dorsal fin and the tail of the fish or also between the anal fins and the tail of the fish. These finlets are found on fast swimming fish like tuna, and is said to aid in the speed of the fish, by cutting through the water.

Scubapro have been constantly innovating newer and more effective scuba diving products and most recently they have outdone themselves with the introduction of their newest creation, the Scubapro Seawing Nova Open Heel Fins.

With this new product, Scubapro have tried to make a fin that will provide all the positives of every style of fin; the thrust provided by a paddle fin combined with the comfort and agility of the spilt-fin and somehow combine them into one remarkable product. The Seawing Nova features a fin with a paddle blade that is independent of the foot pocket and uses pivot control technology to improve kick thrust while reducing drag. This is similar to the tail of a dolphin that moves independently on a hinge offering increased power.

featured above the: Scubapro Seawing Nova Open Heel Fins available at Leisurepro.com

Traditional Scuba fins have a wide middle section that doesn’t improve the effectiveness of the fin, but nevertheless increases drag often causing the dreaded foot cramps and fatigue that divers often experience. The articulated mid-section of the Seawing is designed to stop the fin from bending beyond the optimal point of the fins design, so that no matter how hard or soft you kick, the diver will get maximum propulsion.

The Seawing nova is currently offered in two colors, white or black. The Blade of the fin has accurately been modeled after a manta-ray’s fin, and uses variable blade geometry to help cut through the water and improve dynamics. The Seawing Nova is entirely constructed from a high-tech substance known as elastomer which is a soft rubber compound that provides greater elasticity and shock resistance than ordinary rubber.

The back of the fin comes with a standard spring strap which feels kinda like a spring band but is more like a marine-grade bungee cord. The stretch band has a large integrated loop to grab on to for easy donning or removal, which stays put at the back of the band.

Users of the Scubapro Seawing Nova have claimed that the new fin design does wonders to your fining performance and is especially useful to those divers that cramp up quickly with a harder fin, by offering incredible comfort and agility. Despite the higher price of these fins, they are well worth the performance gained from using them.

Apollo was the first manufacturer to recognize the potential of Split-fin technology. Every major dive company now offers some form of split-fin. Some people feel that the more rigid blade makes it respond slightly quicker to direction changes and alternate kicking styles. It is an excellent choice for very strong kickers as the more rigid blade provides a stronger resistance and more traditional paddle fin feel.

You’ve probably already heard divers everywhere debate the efficiency of Split Fins vs Paddle Fins. Some say the Splits are no good in currents but offer ease and good propulsion in calmer water whereas paddle fins offer greater propulsion and finer control and feel. While it all boils down to a matter of preference and opinion and as to which type of Fins are better, we’ve got the arguments of both side to help you make your pick and decide either way.

Featured above: (left)Tusa X-Pert Zoom Z3 Open Heel Split Fins, (right) Oceanic Viper Open Heel Fins available at LeisurePro.com

Split Fins

Split fins are designed is with an empty space down the center of the blade, splitting it into two parts. The split blades act like separate propellers, twist independently during each stroke to a precise angle of attack that creates lift and thrust and cuts the water, causing water propulsion behind the diver.

The Pro’s of Split Fins-

Split blades are said to have a unique flexibility that helps reduce ankle strain, fatigue and cramping often associated with the use of conventional ‘paddle’ fins.

Splits help move the water across or through the fin, which allow the diver to move through the water quite rapidly because they offer less surface area resistance in the water.

This type of fins works well for those who fin with the flutter kick method as each “leaf” or blade twists creating a propeller-like effect, great for straight-line speed.

featured above: Mares Raptor Open Heel Fins available at LeisurePro.com

The Con’s of Split Fins:

Divers have often complain that you can’t feel split fins when kicking which is sometimes equated with a lack of power.

What split fins lack the stiffness and body you need for frog-kicking, turning and backing up.

These are fine if you are planning on going in a single forward motion the entire time. They are not ideal for those who wish to back track and/or take photographs.

Paddle Fins

Paddle fins have been around since the late 1940’s and changed little except for the materials used. The designs of this type of fins have slowly evolved from heavy stiff black rubber to something lightweight and comfortable.

The Pro’s of Paddle Fins:

They offer, better maneuverability than split fins and are your best bet for slow, deliberate movements in any direction.

Precise movements (pitch, angle, direction) can be felt with stiff paddle fins allowing for a better feel of them working.

Pivots are easy with the large cross-section of the edge of the fin.

Paddle fins are said to work very well in confined areas like commercial diving cave, wreck diving. Because of the high acceleration, they have also become a favorite for spearfishing.

featured above: Mares Avanti Superchannel Full Foot Fins available at LeisurePro.com

The Con’s of Paddle Fins:

Because of the larger surface area of the blade, some divers find it too stiff and that it causes calf cramps. It’s said that Paddle fins cause more strain to the knees while fining too because of the larger surface area of resistance.

Your choice of scuba fins will depend on what type of diving you do as well as your location. One thing for certain is that your fins must fit properly. If your dive fins do not feel as if they are an extension of your limbs, it could make for an uncomfortable dive experience.

Here are a few things to look for when making your decision on fins:

If you are on vacation and are looking to surface dive, force fins are your best option. They are very comfortable and are made of polyurethane, so there is no danger to sea life.

If you are deep sea diving or planning to dive in cold water, you will want scuba fins with adjustable straps i.e open heel fins. This will allow for warming booties as well as provide your feet extra protection from the elements.

Split fins are a good option for those who tend to have muscle spasms in their legs. The way they are designed is with an empty space down the center of the blade causing water propulsion behind the diver. These are fine if you are planning on going in a single forward motion the entire time. They are not ideal for those who wish to back track and/or take photographs. Featured right-Cressi Palau (LAF) Long Adjustable fins available at LeisurePro.com

Figure out which category you belong to and choose your fins accordingly. The right fit should be of utmost importance, and don’t be cheap. Quality fins are one thing that can make or break a scuba diving excursion.

Getting the Right Size Dive Fins
Sizing your scuba diving fins can be a very confusing phase when purchasing scuba gear. Every manufacturer has its own sizing chart, so you should focus on which brand you prefer and stick with it. They all have standard sizes, but each one has its own sales spin to make its product stand out. Words such as ‘Channel Thrust’ or ‘Optimum Angles’ could be used to differentiate the bells and whistles unique to their type of fins. Phrases such as these may mean that a particular fin is more effective at propelling you forward with less effort.

There are also some manufacturers that don’t carry a wide range of sizes such as S, M, L, XL. They may only have S/M or L/XL so be careful when choosing. Review their size chart thoroughly.

Last thing to be taken into consideration when finding the right size fin is whether you will be diving in a wetsuit or dry suit. The latter will generally require that you go up one size … a good piece of information to know when searching for that perfect pair of fins!

The convertible fins from Omega Aquatics came as a breath of fresh air, solving the mobility issue we've previously faced with conventional fins...

All Scuba divers know the importance and what a difference good dive fins can make underwater. But, they’ve also faced the awkwardness and inconvenience of walking around with fins on land. That’s why the convertible fins from Omega Aquatics came as a breath of fresh air, solving the mobility issue we’ve previously faced with regular fins.

Every diver has at some point had the dilemma of whether to waddle across a boat in your dive fins to get to the gate, or the use good dive boat etiquette and carry your fins in your hands till the gate an then put them on in a balancing act with the heavy scuba gear and tank strapped to your back. Shore dives too pose the same problem of walking in fins while entering the water. The Amphibian range of FlipFins is the perfect solution of to both these scenarios and more. The convertible fins are designed to be half fin, half shoe that fold up out of the way allowing you to walk freely out of the water and click down with your first kick once you’re in the water turning into fins.

The Amphibian fins are made up of two pieces – the foot pocket and blade. They are connected by a special hinge called the “Aqua-Hinge,” that allows the blades of the fin to be pulled up so that the diver may walk normally, wearing the slightly curved foot pocket like a pair of overshoes. Once in the water, a normal kicking motion pushes the blades back down and locks them in place so they can be used like conventional fins. Omega Aquatics believed that their product was a natural evolution of fins and begun to sell the flipfins since 2007. They have been a hit with divers ever since.

No more dive boat shuffle, no more doing the one foot dance trying to put on your fins after other dive gear, no more waddling around like a clown in oversized shoes and no more walking to and from the water with your fins in your hands instead of your feet. With the flipfins, the fins can be the first thing you put on and the last thing to take off when you scuba dive. They make walking around, airborne water entry and even climbing dive boat ladders with fins as easy as wearing ordinary shoes.

In the water, just one kick coverts these goofy looking shoes to high performance fins where you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from other top scuba brands fins. Omega Aquatics in their attempt to make fins better out of water haven’t ignored the performance of these fins underwater. “The lightweight fin blade features a soft, central web configuration modeled after a duck web,” says Omega Aquatics, Inc. President and founder Ronen Moyal. “This design element contributes to increased propulsion and reduces the load required for sustained kicking. And with the interchangeable blade system, different types of divers will soon have a variety of choices when purchasing dynamic fins.”

So what are you waiting for? Didn’t you read the no more waddling part? Omega Aquatics’ Flipfins are available at the LeisurePro Store and website www.leisurepro.com or for other authorized dealers visit www.flipfins.com for more information.

Well, that’s exactly the kind of feeling some fish off the coast of North Sulawesi would have had when they saw a slightly different although extremely large shoal of a completely different species in August this year! 2861 divers went for a 31 minute dive simultaneously off the North Sulawesi capital Manado to earn themselves a new Guinness book record. A press release posted by Hobie on DiveBuddy.com quoted

“We have just smashed a world record today. It gives us pride as we can prove our country is a strong maritime nation,” Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Freddy Numberi said after the mass dive.

The number of participants in Manado set a new world record of “most people scuba diving simultaneously”, breaking the previous mark of 979 set in Maldives in 2006.

North Sulawesi Governor Sinjo Sarundayang, Gorontalo Governor Fadel Muhammad, deputy Navy chief Vice Adm. Moekhlas Sidik and 51 foreigners were among the participants of the record breaking dive, which was held as part of the Sail Bunaken festival.

This couldn’t have been an easy feet and just considering the logistics of arranging such a dive would be a nightmare for even the most seasoned dive operators. A feat of this sort would involve 2,861 sets of masks, air tanks, , regulators, wetsuits and no less than 5722 fins! That is one large dive group to say the least.

If only we had some underwater images of what 2861 divers in the water looked like I’m sure it’s an image the fish of that region won’t forget. For each one of those divers, it would have been something fresh for the long book which most other divers couldn’t claim to have seen on their dives.
