No we are not refering to something dirty when we say “Scuba Booties Uncovered” so banish those thoughts from your head; Scuba Booties, also known as Scuba boots are a cross between neoprene socks and a shoe as they have soft neoprene upper-halves with a zipper on its side and hard bottomed soles that allow a diver to walk over rocks and other hard surfaces and protect the diver’s feet. Scuba Booties are used in combination with open heeled fins.

This seemingly insignificant item of scuba diving equipment should not be taken for granted, as it often can mean the difference between a comfortable dive and an unpleasant one. The right pair of scuba booties will help your dive be more comfortable, preventing your feet getting chaffed while finning and protecting your feet from sharp coral, rocks and other nasties.

Pinnacle Apex 6mm Boot

Here are some of the things the humble dive booty can help with:

Protects your feet from Blisters and Chaffing
One of the primary benefits of wearing Scuba Booties is to protect your feet from blisters, fin bite or chaffing caused by the heel of your fin or fin strap constantly rubbing against the back of your heel. Those of you who have experienced these blisters, cuts or chaffed heels will surely attest to the fact that these can be awfully painful in the salt water and take a long time to heal. With the right pair of properly fitting dive boots, you don’t have to worry about getting chaffed while you are underwater.

Protect Your Feet from cuts and abrasions on the Shore and Underwater
The best part about owning booties is the ability to use them without the fins to protect your feet as you walk on the beach, or wade your way to your dive boat on the reef. Even on the dive boat, your booties will protect you from splinters, or nails keeping your feet safe. Those divers who perform surface dives, will attest to the benefits of wearing your booties as you enter the water until it becomes deep enough to don your fins and swim to your dive site. The shallows and rocky reefs have all kinds of nasty sharp things, such as Sea Urchins, Stonefish, sharp Coral, or rocks, broken glass etc, all of which could cause serious injury to your feet if stepped on.

Bare 7mm Coldwater Boot

Hot sand & Boat Decks
A good pair of booties will protect a diver’s feet from the blistering hot beach sand, a hot pavement or a scalding hot boat deck. While selecting a pair of boots for shore diving look for one with thicker soles often called ‘monster soles’ that will provide you with ample protection. Boat divers can opt for the thinner soled dive booties.

Deep See Beachwalker Men’s

Keep your Feet Warm in the Cold
If you are a cold water scuba diver, a pair of dive boots will add that extra layer of insulation and will help keep you feet warm. Dive boots are made of neoprene, like a wetsuit. and come in thickness ranging from 2mm to 7mm. As a rule of thumb, your boots should be the same thickness as your wetsuit or a couple of mm thicker since your extremities tend to get colder faster.

Well there you have it, the humble dive booties protect your feet from blisters and chaffing, keep your feet protected from cuts and abrasions, protect you from hot surfaces such as sand or pavement and also keep your feet warm in cold water. So the next time you’re planning to purchase a pair of fins, spare some thought to the benefits of diving with open heeled fins with dive boots and we’re sure you won’t ever dive without them!

There are several different kinds of underwater writing devices ranging from slates to notebooks for divers. Whether you are a new diver or a Dive Instructor, or anywhere in between, you may have the need to write something down underwater. Whether it’s asking questions underwater or recording them for later back on the boat or simply noting down what kind of marine life you encountered to help you remember when filling out your log book later on. For an Underwater Photographer it may be the camera settings used on specific shots you took for review later, or the Instructor for writing evaluations of student’s skills; whatever the need underwater writing devices are a real boon to scuba divers. Here is a compilation of various responses we got while asking fellow scuba divers who use dive slate what they use their slates for?

“Well I’m a Dive Instructor, so my dive slate is an invaluable tool to communicate underwater with my trainees. I also note down all of the skills and important activities I need to cover on my slate, like a lesson plan and check them off as we progress.”

– Hassan A. PADI Scuba Instructor

Aqua Glow Slate Large 6″ X 8″

“I use my Slate to record all kinds of marine life and coral we encounter on my dive, and when I’m back on the surface, I refer to the slate while filling out my log book. Helps me remember what I saw on each dive”

– Kate H. Advanced Open Water Diver

“My husband and I always calculate our dive plan referring to our dive tables and note them down on our slates. While we both wear dive computers we like to have to have something to fall back on in case it fails. We note down our maximum NDL time at the depth we intend to dive at as well as make note of the two zones immediately following that depth. The slate is extremely helpful to a diver as he has to remember so many things during a dive, and one less thing by using a slate makes a big difference”

– Gillian C. Rescue Diver

“My dive slate is my logbook in carry with me underwater. I have one of those that have preformatted details such as buddy, depth, PSI/BAR start, time up time down etc. This is really helpful as I hate filing up my logbook after a tiring days diving, and now I don’t have to until I get a free day.”

– Brendon S. Open Water diver

Innovative Divers Slate with Split Ring

“As an underwater photographer I use my dive slate to note down my camera settings for a macro, wide angle shots as well as strobe power settings that worked really well on my last dive, so that I can try similar settings which give me the best combination.

With summer just a few short months away, Scuba Divers are gearing up to go diving again. The harsh sun can be a divers worse enemy. Here are a few must carry along items to ensure you stay protected from the effects of the sun.

Sunscreen
Sunscreen, also commonly known as sun block, sun lotion or sun cream, is a must have item in your summer scuba diving kit. s a lotion, spray, gel or other topical product that absorbs or reflects some of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin exposed to sunlight and thus helps protect against sunburn. Sunscreen effectiveness can be measured by the sun protection factor of a sunscreen or SPF level which is a laboratory measure of the effectiveness of sunscreen. The higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UV-B. So, wearing a sunscreen with SPF 50, your skin will not burn until it has been exposed to 50 times the amount of solar energy that would normally cause it to burn.As a Scuba Diver you’ll probably want sunscreen that isn’t too oily, or greasy, which will cause your mask to leak, and also one that is preferably environmentally sound.

DriGrip SPF30 Sunscreen For Fishermen

RashGuard
A rash guard, also known as a rashie, or a rash vest, is a tightly-fitted garment made from either lycra, nylon or polyester, that is specifically designed for athletic wear or water sports to prevent the upper body from chaffing or getting rashes, but also doubles up as a sun protection layer. Back on the boat or above water while scuba diving or performing any kind of water sport, a rash guard is the best form of UV protection against getting sun burnt. Special UV ray protection rash guards are available made from fabrics that may provide up to UPF 50+ protection. While sunscreen is only as effective as you apply it, and leaves room for missed spots, a full sleeved rash guard can protect your upper body completely. This is especially useful to snorkelers, kayakers and surfers who spend extended periods of time with their backs exposed to the sun.

Pinnacle Rash Guard Long Sleeve Mens

Sunglasses
Sunglasses, shades or any form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight is a essential gear item for any Scuba Diver. Water tends to reflect the harsh rays of the sun like a mirror which can intensify the glare or light shining into your eyes causing headaches. Look for sunglasses that filter out 99%-100% UV light and provide maximum protection to your eyes.

100% Ultra Violet Polarized Dive Shades, Curacao style, Rimless Frame.

Cap
A Cap, hat, visor or any form of head gear with a visor to shield your eyes from the direct glare of the sun is another must-have accessory when heading out scuba diving. A Baseball cap, or a bucket hat will do nicely . Look for caps that are water resistant or won’t lose their shape if they get wet.

Leisure Pro Divers Baseball Cap

Water Bottle
Dehydration is a Divers worse enemy, so make sure you stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water between dives. Carry along a couple of your own sipper bottles and some packets of ORS Oral Rehydration Salts to keep those essential minerals and salts in check.

Mcnett Aquamira Water Bottle & Microbiological Filter

The Humble Scuba Pointer known to divers by several names, such as a Muck Stick, The Tank Ticklin’ Stick”, Shark Stick, or reef stick. By whatever name it goes by the scuba pointer is a fantastic tool that offers so much versatility as an underwater tool or accessory. For those that don’t know what a Scuba Pointer is, it is a short stick usually made of an anti-corrosive metal, with a hole at one end through which a lanyard can be attached, and sometimes a rattle on the other end. Since there are several possible uses of this tool, we decided to dub it the Swiss-army knife of scuba diving equipment.

Xs Scuba Rattle Pointer available at Leisurepro.com

As a Pointer
The Scuba Pointer as its name suggests is primarily used by divers, instructors or dive masters to point out marine life or interesting coral to their group without having to get too close or touch the creature. Works well when pointing out a hungry moray to the group and looking to save your fingers, or to point out the tiny nudibranch on the rocks that no one seems to spot.

As a Muck Stick
When diving in sandy or silty sites, such as the ocean bed or a lake bed, the Scuba Pointer is a great way to stay off the surface and cause silt or sand to rise, reducing visibility. While this is no crutch or substitute for learning proper buoyancy, if conditions warrant the use of one, its better than disturbing the sand.

Tank Banger
A Pointer stick even without a rattle attached can be used as an effective tank banger, or noise maker to get the attention of your fellow divers in case of an emergency or a stunning sighting. If you purchase one that has a rattle attached, then this would work even better, without scaring all the fish away!

To prevent touching anything
While its best practice not to touch anything while scuba diving, sometimes it may be unavoidable, especially when diving in stronger current, or inside a wreck, cavern etc. In such cases its better to use your Scuba Pointer to touch the surface to prevent collision, especially if there are nasties like stone fish or urchins around. Also this practice minimizes the area of contact with the reef or environment protecting damage to reefs, or creatures you cannot see. Always ensure you look where you use your scuba pointer to avoid contact with any coral or creatures.

Anchor in strong current
If you get a sturdy Scuba Pointer or Muck Stick, this can be used to anchor yourself in strong current to the seabed, to give yourself a breather as you fight the current.

Monopod for Photography
A muck stick is a fantastic tool to act as a monopod while taking pictures. It keeps the photographer, and his/her camera, from making contact with the reef, and can help support the weight of a heavy DSLR and keep the photographer in place, especially during macro shooting.

Self Defense
While not intended to be used for this purpose, the pointer stick can always help out in a pinch. If a fish, suppose a Titan Trigger starts getting aggressive and territorial and attempts at attacking a diver, apart from kicking it with your rubber fins, a sharp poke might make it turn away. Some experts recommend that a pointer stick may be useful to scare away a curious shark. When a shark gets a little too close for comfort, you can give a few quick jabs to the gills to scare the shark off.

We all have our favorite must-have scuba accessories that we love to have clipped onto our BCD jackets on every dive, and often have so many items clipped on, that we have no free rings left, and then stuff our pockets as well! Each diver has their own preferences when it comes to what to take and what to leave behind on a dive, and opinions are strongly divided when it comes to how much scuba gear is really necessary when diving. There is the School of thought that believes in having nothing clipped-on to the BCD which could tangle, obstruct or increase drag while underwater. Then again there are divers that believe that having these safety and comfort accessories can mean the difference between an emergency and a mishap underwater.

Here is a list we’ve put together with 5 of our must-have BCD Clip-on accessories:

Surface Marker Buoy (SMB)
The SMB or Safety Sausage we believe is the quintessential piece of Safety equipment that every diver should have, especially in open water boat dives, where waves, currents and conditions can make it difficult for the boat to spot a surfaced diver. While some prefer to have this clipped on to their BCD, where it is easily accessible, others prefer to have this often larger item tucked away inside their BCD pockets; either way it is one item we would never dive without.

Blue Reef Diver Below Deluxe 6′ Signal Tube

Storm Whistle
A good quality emergency or storm whistle is another standard clip on attachment to our ideal BCD set up. Grab the attention of your boat or rescuers with a crisp and clear audible alarm. Storm whistles are also designed for use in all weather conditions and underwater as well, making it a great emergency item that costs nothing and takes up hardly any room on your BCD. We recommend swapping the standard BCD whistle with a good quality louder storm whistle like the one we have featured below available at LeisurePro.com.

Storm Whistle

Pointer Stick with Rattle
These handy anti-corrosive steel pointer rods are multi-purpose, making them our Swiss-army knife of the Scuba world and puts them on our list of must-have BCD attachments. Apart from pointing out marine life, the pointer stick can be used as a tank banger to get the attention of your buddies which eliminates the need for carrying a separate noise maker or rattle. These pointer sticks with a rattle attached to the handle also help get your buddies attention easily. The stick can be used to minimize your contact with coral and avoid touching things with your hands, and also to get yourself purchase in case of strong currents. Metal sticks have been known to repel sharks and other fish when touched by it as it is said to disrupt their magnetic senses.

Xs Scuba Rattle Pointer

Dive light or Torch
Even when not night diving, a secondary or compact dive light is a must on our list of BCD Clip-on gear. Whether peering under a rock to spot shrimp or lobster, or grabbing the attention of your buddy underwater or boatman on the surface, the dive light is another multipurpose must-have dive accessory.

Intova Nova Torch 4.7 watt LED #IFL660

Line Cutter/Dive Knife
A line cutter or a small dive knife equipped with a line cutter is probably the final item that makes our BCD Clip on list. A Dive Knife is not a weapon but more of a general tool and safety device. Can substitute a tank banger, can be useful to have on shore as well as in case you get caught in fishing line underwater. Don’t get a dive knife that doesn’t have a line cutter included in its design.

XS Scuba Beta Titanium Knife Blunt Tip

The Mares Fin Shape 2.0 GB USB Drive
My personal favorite from the list (a not so subtle hint to those stuffing my stocking this year*wink wink*) is this fin shaped USB drive from Mares. It’s fun yet practical and lets face it, it’s cute! You know you want one! This 2 GB USB drive is packaged in a gift-worthy case and includes a neck lanyard for convenient carrying.

Christmassy Marine Life
How about these adorable marine animals dressed up for the holidays? A soft cuddly big eyed turtle or cute dolphin with santa hats are ideal for the festive season and very reasonably priced.

Scuba License Plates
The current two products featured on the website are featured below:

LeisurePro’s Super Special of the Week: Princeton Tec Save-A-Dive Kit

The Princeton Tec Save-A-Dive Kit is a must have scuba diving equipment spares kit that contains only the most basic and essential spares, that could potentially save your dive. This handy waterproof tube contains a Mask Strap, Fin Strap, Snorkel Keeper, Silicone Mouthpiece, Tie Wrap, and O Rings.

A broken heel strap on a fin, occurring during a dive, can be a real inconvenience and a difficult swim back to the boat. The Fin Strap contained in the Save-a-Dive Kit is heavy duty yet, can be adjusted with ease even with gloves on. A great to have spare on a dive.

The Mask Strap which is a split strap design can be used with all masks and is something that often snaps or breaks due to harsh sunlight, corrosive salt water, abrasive sand and may over-time lose its elasticity and break.

The Kit also contains a Snorkel Keeper that is extra thick for durability and will fit most snorkels available today. The Mouthpiece provided in the kit will fit most regulators and is standard size. All this and more comes packaged in this handy Save-A-Dive waterproof container which is a must have accessory in any divers gear bag.

featured above is the Princeton Tec Save-A-Dive Kit available at LeisurePro.com

LeisurePro’s Super Special of the Month: The Body Rag Towel

The Body Rag towel is a super compact super absorbent towel that is the perfect item for scuba divers or snorkelers to carry with them instead of large bulky swimming towels in their gear bags. Made of a high tech PVA polymer material which is highly absorbent the towel which measures just 33 1/4″ x 13″ is simply great for drying off.

The Body Rag is an extremely hydrophilic, micro-porous, reinforced, high-tech, polymer sponge towel. The towel has a waffle texture on one side for cooling and a smooth texture on the reverse side for fast absorption. Its small size makes it easy to carry with you on a dive boat; a definite must have scuba diving accessory.

Although scuba diving equipment is designed and tested to withstand a lot, they still may sometimes malfunction, leaving the diver having to abort the dive and possibly miss out of the day’s diving if there are no spares at hand. Most common Scuba equipment failures result due to poor maintenance, or excessive wear and tear caused by exposure and oxidization to seawater, chlorine , excessive sunlight, sand or silt etc.

It is recommended that a diver always carry a basic scuba equipment spares kit along on any dive trip that contains a few commonly needed spare parts that will enable you to continue your dive and enjoy your trip in the event that you face a simple equipment failure. This spares Kit need not contain everything, but just a few selected spares mostly rubber or plastic parts that commonly fail :

Mask Strap

The mask strap is perhaps one of the most fragile items prone to failure, since it is stretched constantly and exposed to harsh sunlight, salts, sand and may over-time lose its elasticity and break. Sometimes the elasticity of the rubber/silicone strap may loosen causing a leaky mask during the dive which is annoying. Carrying an extra Mask Strap as a replacement spare is always a great idea.

featured above is a Replaceable Mask Strap available at Leisurepro.com

Fin Straps

A broken heel strap on a fin, occurring during a dive, can be a real inconvenience and a difficult swim back to the boat. Fin heel straps like mask straps are also thin pieces of rubber that are subject to a great deal of wear and stretching, and hence it makes sense to carry an extra pair if you use open heel fins.

featured above Xs Scuba Universal Spring Fin Straps available at Leisurepro.com

A Regulator Mouthpiece

Regulator mouthpieces may sometimes fall off, or break due to wear and tear while diving and having a spare mouthpiece that will fit most regulators will fit comfortably in your mouth minimizing jaw fatigue is essential.

featured above Silicone Regulator Mouthpiece available at Leisurepro.com

O-Rings

These tiny rubber rings are a must have in any diver’s spares kit. Found in a variety of scuba diving equipment O-rings are needed for regulators, U/W lights, as well as tank valves, and may often break due to pressure and wear & tear. Always carry a variety of spare O-rings especially for standard tank valves.

featured above 20 piece “O” Ring Kit available at Leisurepro.com
