There are several different kinds of underwater writing devices ranging from slates to notebooks for divers. Whether you are a new diver or a Dive Instructor, or anywhere in between, you may have the need to write something down underwater. Whether it’s asking questions underwater or recording them for later back on the boat or simply noting down what kind of marine life you encountered to help you remember when filling out your log book later on. For an Underwater Photographer it may be the camera settings used on specific shots you took for review later, or the Instructor for writing evaluations of student’s skills; whatever the need underwater writing devices are a real boon to scuba divers. With summer just a few short months away, Scuba Divers are gearing up to go diving again. The harsh sun can be a divers worse enemy. Here are a few must carry along items to ensure you stay protected from the effects of the sun.

Sunscreen
Sunscreen, also commonly known as sun block, sun lotion or sun cream, is a must have item in your summer scuba diving kit. s a lotion, spray, gel or other topical product that absorbs or reflects some of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin exposed to sunlight and thus helps protect against sunburn. Sunscreen effectiveness can be measured by the sun protection factor of a sunscreen or SPF level which is a laboratory measure of the effectiveness of sunscreen. The higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UV-B. So, wearing a sunscreen with SPF 50, your skin will not burn until it has been exposed to 50 times the amount of solar energy that would normally cause it to burn.As a Scuba Diver you’ll probably want sunscreen that isn’t too oily, or greasy, which will cause your mask to leak, and also one that is preferably environmentally sound.

A rash guard, also known as a rashie, or a rash vest, is a tightly-fitted garment made from either lycra, nylon or polyester, that is specifically designed for athletic wear or water sports to prevent the upper body from chaffing or getting rashes, but also doubles up as a sun protection layer. Back on the boat or above water while scuba diving or performing any kind of water sport, a rash guard is the best form of UV protection against getting sun burnt. Special UV ray protection rash guards are available made from fabrics that may provide up to UPF 50+ protection. While sunscreen is only as effective as you apply it, and leaves room for missed spots, a full sleeved rash guard can protect your upper body completely. This is especially useful to snorkelers, kayakers and surfers who spend extended periods of time with their backs exposed to the sun.

Sunglasses
Sunglasses, shades or any form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight is a essential gear item for any Scuba Diver. Water tends to reflect the harsh rays of the sun like a mirror which can intensify the glare or light shining into your eyes causing headaches. Look for sunglasses that filter out 99%-100% UV light and provide maximum protection to your eyes.

Cap
A Cap, hat, visor or any form of head gear with a visor to shield your eyes from the direct glare of the sun is another must-have accessory when heading out scuba diving. Dehydration is a Divers worse enemy, so make sure you stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water between dives. Carry along a couple of your own sipper bottles and some packets of ORS Oral Rehydration Salts to keep those essential minerals and salts in check.

The Humble Scuba Pointer known to divers by several names, such as a Muck Stick, The Tank Ticklin’ Stick”, Shark Stick, or reef stick. By whatever name it goes by the scuba pointer is a fantastic tool that offers so much versatility as an underwater tool or accessory. For those that don’t know what a Scuba Pointer is, it is a short stick usually made of an anti-corrosive metal, with a hole at one end through which a lanyard can be attached, and sometimes a rattle on the other end. Since there are several possible uses of this tool, we decided to dub it the Swiss-army knife of scuba diving equipment.

As a Pointer
The Scuba Pointer as its name suggests is primarily used by divers, instructors or dive masters to point out marine life or interesting coral to their group without having to get too close or touch the creature. Works well when pointing out a hungry moray to the group and looking to save your fingers, or to point out the tiny nudibranch on the rocks that no one seems to spot.

As a Muck Stick
When diving in sandy or silty sites, such as the ocean bed or a lake bed, the Scuba Pointer is a great way to stay off the surface and cause silt or sand to rise, reducing visibility. While this is no crutch or substitute for learning proper buoyancy, if conditions warrant the use of one, its better than disturbing the sand.

Tank Banger
A Pointer stick even without a rattle attached can be used as an effective tank banger, or noise maker to get the attention of your fellow divers in case of an emergency or a stunning sighting. If you purchase one that has a rattle attached, then this would work even better, without scaring all the fish away!

To prevent touching anything
While its best practice not to touch anything while scuba diving, sometimes it may be unavoidable, especially when diving in stronger current, or inside a wreck, cavern etc. In such cases its better to use your Scuba Pointer to touch the surface to prevent collision, especially if there are nasties like stone fish or urchins around. Also this practice minimizes the area of contact with the reef or environment protecting damage to reefs, or creatures you cannot see. Always ensure you look where you use your scuba pointer to avoid contact with any coral or creatures.

Anchor in strong current
If you get a sturdy Scuba Pointer or Muck Stick, this can be used to anchor yourself in strong current to the seabed, to give yourself a breather as you fight the current.

Monopod for Photography
A muck stick is a fantastic tool to act as a monopod while taking pictures.  It keeps the photographer, and his/her camera, from making contact with the reef, and can help support the weight of a heavy DSLR and keep the photographer in place, especially during macro shooting.

Self Defense
While not intended to be used for this purpose, the pointer stick can always help out in a pinch. If a fish, suppose a Titan Trigger starts getting aggressive and territorial and attempts at attacking a diver, apart from kicking it with your rubber fins, a sharp poke might make it turn away. Some experts recommend that a pointer stick may be useful to scare away a curious shark. When a shark gets a little too close for comfort, you can give a few quick jabs to the gills to scare the shark off.

We all have our favorite must-have scuba accessories that we love to have clipped onto our BCD jackets on every dive, and often have so many items clipped on, that we have no free rings left, and then stuff our pockets as well!  Each diver has their own preferences when it comes to what to take and what to leave behind on a dive, and opinions are strongly divided when it comes to how much scuba gear is really necessary when diving. There is the School of thought that believes in having nothing clipped-on to the BCD which could tangle, obstruct or increase drag while underwater. Then again there are divers that believe that having these safety and comfort accessories can mean the difference between an emergency and a mishap underwater.

Surface Marker Buoy (SMB)
The SMB or Safety Sausage we believe is the quintessential piece of Safety equipment that every diver should have, especially in open water boat dives, where waves, currents and conditions can make it difficult for the boat to spot a surfaced diver. While some prefer to have this clipped on to their BCD, where it is easily accessible, others prefer to have this often larger item tucked away inside their BCD pockets; either way it is one item we would never dive without.

Storm Whistle

A line cutter or a small dive knife equipped with a line cutter is probably the final item that makes our BCD Clip on list. A Dive Knife is not a weapon but more of a general tool and safety device. Although scuba diving equipment is designed and tested to withstand a lot, they still may sometimes malfunction, leaving the diver having to abort the dive and possibly miss out of the day’s diving if there are no spares at hand. Most common Scuba equipment failures result due to poor maintenance,  or excessive wear and tear caused by exposure and oxidization to seawater, chlorine , excessive sunlight, sand or silt etc.

It is recommended that a diver always carry a basic scuba equipment spares kit along on any dive trip that contains a few commonly needed spare parts that will enable you to continue your dive and enjoy your trip in the event that you face a simple equipment failure.  This spares Kit need not contain everything, but just a few selected spares mostly rubber or plastic parts that commonly fail :

Mask Strap

The mask strap is perhaps one of the most fragile items prone to failure, since it is stretched constantly and exposed to harsh sunlight, salts, sand and may over-time lose its elasticity and break.  Sometimes the elasticity of the rubber/silicone strap may loosen causing a leaky mask during the dive which is annoying. Fin Straps
